History
For more than 10,000 years, the
Ohlone Indians lived in the Vasona
Park area, alongside the Los Gatos
Creek. In March 1776, Captain Juan
Bautista de Anza and his expedition
camped on the Los Gatos Creek,
near the present Lark Avenue.

The first Mission Santa Clara was
built in 1777 using redwood timbers
from the Los Gatos area.

In 1839, Jose Maria Hernandez and
Sebastian Fabian Peralta were
granted the 6,631-acre El Rancho
Rinconada de los Gatos (corner of
the cats). The brother-in-laws built
their adobe home along the Los Gatos
creek in what is now Vasona Park.

Juilian Hanks and Isaac Branham build the first sawmill on
the Los Gatos Creek in 1847 (Lexington area) and established a
lumber yard in Los Gatos at East Main Street and College Avenue.
James Alexander Forbes' Santa Rosa Brand Flour Mill, now the
Forbes Mill Museum, began milling for local wheat farmers in
1855, and the village starts to grow along East Main Street.

The first Los Gatos Post office was established in the Ten Mile
House Hotel in December 1864 where Tollhouse Hotel stands today.

On August 10, 1887, the Town of Los Gatos was established,
incorporating one square mile on both sides of the Los Gatos Creek.

In the next 40 years downtown Los Gatos grew and many beautiful
homes were built for both permanent residents and for those using
Los Gatos as a weekend resort. An influx of new residents happened
after World War II and Los Gatos incorporated the surrounding
area to keep San Jose from taking the adjacent land.

In 1957, State Route 17 freeway was completed to SanJose, along
the Los Gatos Creek, changing the character of downtown
Los Gatos, by removing the traffic to Santa Cruz. Today Los Gatos
is an upscale communtiy, with a downtown area filled with antique
stores, art galleries and fine restaurants.
