Tahoe Mountain Biking

He wore his black,
wide brimmed hat low
over his forehead to
cover his missing left
eye and the metal
plate in his head. The
citizens of Santa Clara
county claim him for
their own, even
naming a popular
nightspot after him, but
Santa Cruzans know better. 

Who was this man, this
Mountain Charley of the
many legends? 

In the 1850's antelope were
abundant in the Santa Clara
Valley. Grizzly bear were
numerous in the mountains
and very destructive to
stock. One monster grizzly
in the foothills of the
Santa Cruz mountains was
notorious for his depredations
of long standing. A heavy
reward was offered by the
ranchers for his scalp as the
bear had killed many
